ABSTRACT
The Healthcare industry is currently experiencing a plethora of technological changes and at the heart of these innovations is the increasing usage of Health Information Technology (HIT). Health Informatics (HI) as a field of study, focuses upon these HIT activities as well as other aspects of applied research and practice. Should educators be addressing these emerging technological trends, such as mobile applications, healthcare analytics and associated healthcare technologies? Is there an imminent need for health informatics coverage in the business information systems curriculum? And if so, what should be included as student learning outcomes and course content for the Health Informatics course? This manuscript attempts to analyze these questions in general and provide evidence for augmenting business information systems and the curricula with a course in health informatics. An abbreviated syllabus and other resources are provided for the reader audience.
