ABSTRACT
Pay for performance programs have been around for over a decade. The purpose behind these programs is to incentivize medical providers to increase the quality of medical care, while simultaneously lowering the cost of the medical care provided. These programs have been both successful and unsuccessful depending on the methodology, metrics graded, and financial incentives for the medical providers. This study examines pay for performance (P4P) programs in the medical field, specifically focusing on Medicaid which services lower economic and underinsured populations. Also discussed will be the data collected from the results of a first year Pay for Performance program that specifically targeted Medicaid medical providers in South Texas.
