THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS: WHY DON’T MILLENNIALS JOIN UNIONS?

Steven V. Cates Kaplan University

ABSTRACT

The authors know them as the Millennial Generation, Generation Y, or the Nexters Generation; and they have been the topic of much controversy recently. A new era has begun in the American workplace. Namely, the authors of this study refer to have four distinctly different generations in the workplace at the same time. Organizations that manage and overcome the challenges ahead will be at the forefront of their industries, and their firm’s performance will supersede the competition by leaps, and bounds. The problem is the literature is almost devoid of any literature in the past ten (10) years on this subject. This study is an investigation that attempts to uncover the reasons of why Millennials do not join unions. Furthermore, this is an exploration, of the implications of understanding (or not understanding) these underlying causes; and how it will affect organizations’ human capital and their future performance.
